It is located in the village of Årnes, just east of the Åfjorden and west of the lake Stordalsvatnet.

It is one of two churches in the Åfjord og Stoksund parish which is part of the Fosen prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros.

Over the next couple years, a new church was built on the same site.

Each church parish was a constituency that elected people called "electors" who later met together in each county to elect the representatives for the assembly that was to meet at Eidsvoll Manor later that year.

[5][6] In 1849, the church was struck by lightning which caused some fire damage to the roof.
