It is the church for the Åmot parish which is part of the Sør-Østerdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Hamar.
The brown, wooden church was built in a cruciform design in 1902 using plans drawn up by the architect Henrik Bull.
In 1628, the old church was torn down and a new timber-framed cruciform building on the same site.
Each church parish was a constituency that elected people called "electors" who later met together in each county to elect the representatives for the assembly that was to meet in Eidsvoll later that year.
A new cruciform, dragestil church was built to replace it on the same site.
