Chiba Prefecture Ōtaki has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with light to no snowfall.

[2] Per Japanese census data,[3] the population of Ōtaki has been decreasing over the past 70 years and is now less than it was a century ago.

Honda Tadakatsu's placement at Ōtaki was a strong buffer against the military power of the Satomi clan to the south.

One of the survivors was Governor General of the Philippines Rodrigo de Vivero, who was subsequently granted an audience with shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu.

On April 1, 1889, under the same administrative reforms, the four villages of Oikawa, Nishihata, Fusamoto, Kamitaki and the town of Ōtaki were formed.

Ōtaki has a mayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and a unicameral town council of 12 members.

In terms of national politics, the town is part of Chiba 11th district of the lower house of the Diet of Japan.

Ōtaki hosts the Oshiro-matsuri, or castle festival, in September, which involves a parade and various plays and demonstrations on the grounds of one of the town's elementary schools.
