The seat became vacant following the death of the Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP) Sir William Pearce, who died at the age of 55 on 18 December 1888.
Pender had previously served as a Liberal MP for Totnes in Devon and later for Wick Burghs.
The result was a victory for Wilson, who held the seat until he stepped down at the 1900 general election.
Pender returned to Parliament three years later, when he regained his Wick Burghs seat at the 1892 general election.
