Prior to the election, on September 9, 1960, Nebraska Governor Ralph G. Brooks died while in office.

[1] Thus, the 1960 lieutenant governor election featured incumbent Nebraska Governor Dwight W. Burney, a Republican, defeating Democratic nominee Norman A. Otto,[2] who was chosen by the Nebraska Democratic Party to replace Edward A. Dosek, who had won the Democratic primaries but had withdrawn from the race.

[3] Although Edward A. Dosek won the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor on May 10, 1960, he did not run in the general election on November 8.

On September 7, 1960, Dosek announced that he had withdrawn from the race for health reasons and the fact that his insurance license had been suspended.
