In their 17th year under head coach Edwin Struck, the Redbirds compiled a 5–4 record (4–2 in conference games), tied for second place in the IIAC, and were outscored by a total of 142 to 129.

Halfback Ron Schieber was selected as the team's most valuable player for the 1961 season.
