Democrat John W. Reynolds won the election with 50.36% of the vote, narrowly defeating Republican Philip Kuehn in the state's closest gubernatorial election since 1940.

As of 2024[update], this is the only time Menominee County has voted for the Republican candidate in a gubernatorial election.

The primary election was held on September 11, 1962.

After this election, Rock County would not vote for the losing candidate again until 2010 and Brown County would not vote for the losing candidate again until 2002.
