1982 Flinders by-election

A by-election was held for the Australian House of Representatives seat of Flinders on 4 December 1982.

It was triggered by the resignation of the sitting member and former Liberal Party deputy leader, Sir Phillip Lynch.

Fifteen people nominated for Liberal preselection, including Jim Short, Roger Johnston and Richard Alston.

On 3 February 1983, before Parliament could meet following the by-election, the Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, called a double dissolution election for 5 March.

Opponents of the Franklin Dam in Tasmania (which was eventually vetoed by the incoming Hawke Government in 1983) used the Flinders by-election as an informal referendum.
