The Indians' starting pitcher, Orel Hershiser, was voted the American League Championship Series' Most Valuable Player.

The Braves had the National League's Cy Young Award winner in Greg Maddux, who finished the season with a 19–2 won-loss record and a 1.63 earned run average as a starting pitcher.
