The 1999 Irish local elections were held in all the counties, cities and towns of Ireland on Friday, 11 June 1999, on the same day as the European elections.
[1][2] Each local government area was divided into local electoral areas (LEAs) in which councillors were elected for a five-year term on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV).
During the period of office of these councils, local government throughout the state was restructured under the Local Government Act 2001.
In January 1999, Democratic Left merged with the Labour Party.
One Workers' Party councillor had joined Labour since 1991.
