[2] The 1999 event was based in the city of Cordoba in Argentina and was contested over twenty two special stages, covering a total competitive distance of 396.63 km (246.45 miles).
With two wins on the season so far, Tommi Makinen lead the championship with twenty nine points; one more than closest rival Didier Auriol.
Finishing a position ahead of Makinen, Auriol and the Finnish driver would be level on points at the end of the rally.
The Rally was won by Juha Kankkunen and co-driver Juho Repa, their first win of the season.
The event was open to crews competing in the World Rally Championship, as well as privateer entries that were not registered to score points in the manufacturer's championship.
