Legislative Assembly elections were held in Indian state of West Bengal in 2001 to elect 294 members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
[1] Left Front led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 196 seats, a majority.
Pankaj Kumar Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress, took charge as Leader of the Opposition.
This was also the first time since its landslide victory in 1977, that the ruling CPI(M) failed to win a majority on its own.
As of 2022, this was also the last time that no single party won an outright majority.
