2005 in Iraq

← → Events in the year 2005 in Iraq.

In late August 2005, violence occurred in Najaf, Nasiriyah, Diwaniyah, and Sadr City (Baghdad).

The Shi'ite infighting was between the supporters of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and the Badr Organization, who are backed by the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI).

Some Shi'a National Assembly members and ministers suspended their membership in the council because of the violence.

Since Sadr's Mahdi Army were expelled from the city of Najaf, fighting between rival Shi'a groups has ceased.

As Coalition Forces arrive at a car bombing in South Baghdad, a second car bomb is detonated, targeting those responding to the initial incident. 14 April 2005
