The Wizards began the season hoping to improve on their 43–39 record from the previous season, but failed and fell 24 games short.
The team finished 2008–09 with a dismal 19–63 record that equalled their worst 82-game performance from the 2000–01 season, and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since the 2003–04 season.
