2012 Hawaii elections

[1] U.S. Representative Mazie Hirono sought and received the Democratic nomination to succeed Akaka.

She defeated former U.S. Representative Ed Case, Michael Gillespie, Antonio Gimbernat, and Arturo Pacheco Reyes in the Democratic primary.

[3][4] Democratic incumbent Colleen Hanabusa, who had represented the 1st district since January 2011, ran for re-election.

[9] Tulsi Gabbard, then a member of the Honolulu City Council, sought and received the Democratic nomination to succeed Hirono.

She defeated Rafael Del Castillo, an attorney; Mufi Hannemann, the former Mayor of Honolulu; Esther Kia'aina, the chief advocate of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs; Bob Marx, an attorney; and, Miles Shiratori, a financial advisor, in the Democratic primary.

He defeated Matt DiGeronimo, a businessman and former Navy officer, in the Republican primary.
