Jelle Vossen gave the visitors a first-half lead with a header from an Adam Clayton cross but Andre Gray equalised eleven minutes into the second half after taking the ball from Middlesbrough goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos.
Brentford dominated the second half but deep into injury time, Fernando Amorebieta struck the winner and the game ended 2–1.
