2016 Republika Srpska National Day referendum

Since the declaration of Republika Srpska (formerly the Republic of the Serb people of Bosnia and Herzegovina) on 9 January 1992, the national day in the entity has been celebrated on that date.

[12]The High Representative Valentin Inzko decried that, by going ahead with the referendum, Republika Srpska authorities are breaching the Dayton Agreement.

[14] Russian diplomat Sergey Lavrov has urged the international community not to increase tensions in the Balkans, and that the referendum bears no threat to the territorial integrity of BiH.

[15] Upon the referendum, Bosniak member of the Bosnian Presidency Bakir Izetbegović stated that the international community would react, that the referendum is an example of breaching the Dayton Agreement, and then predicted Dodik's fall, likening with Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi and Slobodan Milošević.

[18] Dodik stated that the referendum only utilized the democratic right to express the opinion on the national holiday of Republika Srpska, and that the latest decision of the Constitutional Court of BiH, to lawfully abolish the Day, was directed by the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) and its people within the Constitutional Court.

[20] Dodik has stated that he will accept hearing only if it is held in Republika Srpska, and not in Sarajevo, as he fears for his life in the FBiH.
