The resignation of Conservative Party councillor Jim McIlroy on 31 December 2021 led to the Stanwell North by-election, held 23 February 2022.

On 9 June 2020, 6 Conservative Councillors, including Council leader Ian Harvey and Deputy leader Olivia Rybinski, resigned from the Conservative party and created the new United Spelthorne Group on the council.
