In Paris, the same city in which the Reds won the European Cup against Madrid in 1981, they lost 0–1 as Vinícius Júnior scored the only goal of the game for Los Blancos.

On 12 July 2021, Liverpool announced that they would play four friendlies as part of a pre-season training camp in Austria.

[44] On 29 July, the Reds confirmed that they would face Bologna in two sixty-minute matches as part of a training camp in France in between the previously announced engagements.

[48] Liverpool were drawn at home to Shrewsbury Town in the third round to begin their participation in the competition.

The draw for the round of 16 took place on 13 December 2021 at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
