The Maple Leafs qualified for the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season, but they were upset in the first round by the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, losing in seven games, despite leading the series 3–2 with a 3–2 lead after the 2nd period of Game 6.
