The team was led by head coach Tony Bennett in his 13th year and played their home games at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

They defeated Louisville in the Second Round of the ACC tournament before losing in the quarterfinals to North Carolina.

They received an at-large bid to the National Invitation Tournament where they defeated Mississippi State and North Texas to advance to the quarterfinals where they lost to St. Bonaventure.

4 seed in the West region where they were upset in the First Round by Ohio.
