New ward boundaries were drawn up for this election, with the number of seats on the council reducing from 54 to 48.
[2] Prior to the election the council was under Conservative majority control.
Following the election the council was left under no overall control with the Liberal Democrats being the largest party; the Conservative leader of the council, Jonathan Ash-Edwards, lost his seat.
