Dawn Davis said that the imprint name comes from the 37th parallel north which intersects California, Africa, and Italy—three places that have been significant to Davis.

"[1] Upon its launch, the imprint was expected to publish ten titles per year spread across literary fiction, memoir, narrative non-fiction, history and pop culture books.
[3] While the imprint has published many titles by African-American authors, Davis stated in an interview on NPR that 37 Ink "wants to publish books that represent a diverse array of cultures and viewpoints because that is what readers want.
