It was discovered on 4 October 1986, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.
[4] The asteroid was later named after American physics teacher Orville Karge.
[2] Karge orbits the Sun in the inner main-belt at a distance of 1.8–2.7 AU once every 3 years and 5 months (1,235 days).
[1][5] This minor planet was named after Orville B. Karge (1919–1990), a teacher of physics in San Diego, California.
[2] The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 21 November 1991 (M.P.C.
