The 83rd Division (Chinese: 第83师) was created in February 1949 under the Regulation of the Redesignations of All Organizations and Units of the Army, issued by Central Military Commission on November 1, 1948,.

Its history can be traced to the 11th Division, Shandong Military Region, formed in November 1946.
In October 1952, 249th Regiment, 83rd Division was decimated in the Battle of Nanri Island.
It was then composed of: In November 1969, the division was redeployed to Yuncheng, Shanxi along with the 28th Army Corps.
