Aşkale is a municipality and district of Erzurum Province, Turkey.
[4] In 1942, the Varlık Vergisi (Turkish: [vɑɾˈɫɯk ˈvæɾɟisi], "wealth tax" or "capital tax") was imposed on the minority non-Muslim citizens of Turkey (mainly Jews, Greeks, Armenians, and Levantines.
[5] Those unable to pay had to work off their debt in labor camps in Aşkale.
[6] The law was repealed on 15 March 1944,[7] and minority citizens who were at the labour camps were sent back to their homes.
