Rotten Tomatoes gives it a "fresh" rating of 88% , based on 17 reviews and an average score of 7/10.

Hal Hinson of The Washington Post called it "the best American documentary since Hoop Dreams and one of a small handful of essential films about politics in this country.

(PBS), R. J. Cutler, and David Van Taylor were nominated for Outstanding Investigative Journalism (Programs).

It was reissued on DVD by First Run on April 20, 2004, with special features, including an audio commentary by Cutler and Van Taylor.
