A native of Newbern, Alabama, Pinkston played one game for the Cleveland Buckeyes of the Negro leagues in 1948.

Pinkston went on to play minor league baseball for such clubs as the Ottawa Athletics, Columbus Jets and Amarillo Gold Sox, and spent several years in the Mexican League into the mid-1960s, eventually earning induction into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.

Chávez would go on to become a professional soccer player, representing Mexico in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

[3] Pinkston died in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1981 at age 63.
