The park is located in western Arizona about 38 miles (61 km) north of Wenden.

The dam was constructed in 1968 by the Army Corps of Engineers, primarily for flood control purposes.
While the Bill Williams River is often dry, heavy seasonal rains maintain the lake's depth.
