He had a successful career as a businessman in Russia, where he and his brother, Oleg, made a small fortune selling vodka in North Ossetia.
During this period both Alborovs were arrested and convicted under Article 330 part 2 of the Criminal Code of Russia for kidnapping the daughter of a business rival and the pair were sent to a penal colony in Siberia for three years.
