He played college football at Oklahoma State University, where he won a championship and held the record for most passes received in a game in the program's history.
He played tight end on the 1945 national championship team, alongside halfback Bob Fenimore, who would later go on to be inducted in the Dallas Cowboys' Ring of Honor.
[2] Loyd was selected in the 15th round of the 1950 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, but was then traded to the San Francisco 49ers before the start of that season.
When his football career ended, he moved to Dallas to join one of his brother's sporting goods company as a sales rep.[1] Loyd died in 1976 at the age of 48 due to cancer.
His teammates from the 1945 Oklahoma championship team, including Fenimore, served as pallbearers at his funeral.
