The American Kitefliers Association (AKA) was created in 1964 by Robert M. Ingraham of New Mexico.

The national organizations are members of a loosely-organized international collective, termed Sport Team and Competitive Kiting (STACK).

Past locations include Seaside, Oregon (2019), Shreveport, Louisiana (2018), Ocean City, Maryland (2017), Seaside, Oregon (2016), Enid, Oklahoma (2015), and Nags Head, North Carolina (2014).
