Abner Howell was the first person elected to the office of justice of the peace.

[4] At the 2000 census, there were 3,960 people, 1,492 households, and 1,145 families living in the township.

There were 1,566 housing units at an average density of 34.9 per square mile (13.5/km2).

[5] Of the 1,492 households, 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families.
