According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.6 square miles (95 km2), of which 0.06 square miles (0.16 km2), or 0.17%, are water.

[1] As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 5,246 people, 1,715 households, and 1,413 families residing in the township.

There were 1,761 housing units at an average density of 48.3 per square mile (18.6/km2).

The racial makeup of the township was 98.06% White, 0.11% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races.

14.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
