Following the creation of the new Batubara Regency (which was carved out of Asahan Regency on 15 June 2007), the regency now covers an area of 3,732.97 square kilometres; it had a population of 668,272 according to the 2010 census[2] and 769,960 in the 2020 Census;[3] the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 802,563 (comprising 405,617 males and 396,946 females).
The regency is divided administratively into twenty-five Districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 Census[2] and the 2020 Census,[3] together with the official estimates as of mid-2023.
