It is the church for the Aure parish which is part of the Ytre Nordmøre prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Møre.
The white, wooden church was built in a cruciform style in 1924 by the architect Nils Ryjord.
The first church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Sankta Maria kyrkja).
This was done along with hundreds of other churches that the King of Denmark-Norway sold to help pay off the debts of the Great Northern War.
Each church parish was a constituency that elected people called "electors" who later met together in each county to elect the representatives for the assembly that was to meet in Eidsvoll later that year.
Some of the historic items from the church were rescued from the building during the fire including the altarpiece and baptismal font.
