The airport was built by the United States Army Air Forces and opened in May 1943.
After the war, the airfield was turned over to local authorities which converted it into a civil airport.
Barnwell Regional Airport covers an area of 859 acres (348 ha) at an elevation of 246 feet (75 m) above mean sea level.
