He played college football at the University of Notre Dame, where he won two national championships, was twice named a consensus All-American in 1947, and 1948, and was awarded the Outland Trophy, as the nation's top lineman in 1948.

He opted to stay in school, and won the Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman in 1948.
