William E. Mayer is the former owner of the now-defunct United Football League's Virginia Destroyers.
He previously served as the owner of the Hartford Colonials, formerly the New York Sentinels, of the same league.
Mayer graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S.
He later returned to his alma mater as a business professor, and served as the dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business from 1992 to 1996.
