Krieger is Native American, and is also known by his pseudonym Sgah’gahsowáh, a Mohawk name meaning "the witch hawk".
The project's first single, "Barefoot Ghost Dance on Blood Soaked Soil", was released shortly after on February 13, 2022.
[4] The song's lyrics allude to historical events such as the Wounded Knee massacre, which took place in 1890, and the more recent Dakota Access Pipeline protests of 2016.
[3][9] The album melds conventional black metal with elements of traditional indigenous music, such as the Native American flute, and acoustic interludes.
Musically, Krieger has cited Dissection, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Opeth, Enslaved, Wolves in the Throne Room, Panopticon, Immortal, Bathory, and Mayhem as influences.
"[22] The single's cover art features American photographer Edward Curtis's 1908 photo "Sun dance pledgers--Cheyenne".
[23] Krieger has also used other Curtis photographs on Blackbraid merchandise, including "Kutenai Duck Hunter" and "Atsina Warrior".
Obviously, I would like to see strides towards decolonization made, but when it comes to Blackbraid, the project is largely just an outlet for my own emotions and is not politically oriented whatsoever.
