In 2017, Wakeling won the silver medal in the men's 69 kg event at the Oceania Weightlifting Championships held in Gold Coast, Australia.

In the same month, he also competed in the men's 69 kg event at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
