[1] Breakingviews was founded in 1999 by Hugo Dixon, a former editor of the Financial Times' Lex column, and his colleague Jonathan Ford.

On January 1, 2007, the Wall Street Journal syndicated the service for a daily column on the back page of the "Money and Investing" section and WSJ.com.
[4][5] Reuters announced in October 2012 that Dixon would step down as global editor-in-chief of Breakingviews, to be succeeded by Rob Cox.
