He attended Concordia College (Moorhead, Minnesota) and he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and had three majors: physics, mathematics, and business in 2000.

[3] He was trained at Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida and was commissioned in the United States Navy thereafter.

He then served two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom aboard the aircraft carrier USS Harry S.

Later he was deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve; he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71).

Kesselring remained with the team for an additional season beyond the standard two-year term to facilitate the transition.
