Shantry made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire against Somerset in the 1978 County Championship.
In 1983 Shantry made his List-A debut for Dorset against Essex in the 1st round of the 1983 NatWest Trophy.
In 1990 Shantry made his debut for Shropshire in a List-A match against Derbyshire in the 1990 NatWest Trophy.
Shantry represented Shropshire in a further List-A match in 1993 against Somerset in the NatWest Trophy.
Shantry's sons Adam and Jack both played first-class cricket.
