It comprised the western part of the island of Vestvågøya in what is now Vestvågøy Municipality.

During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee.

At the time of the municipal dissolution, it was part of the Buksnes prestegjeld and the Lofoten prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland.

The municipality was located on the western part of the large island of Vestvågøya.
