The nearest town is Alton, which lies about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) to the south-east.

Burkham House lies in the centre of the hamlet, around one mile south to Bentworth.

In 1590 Robert Hunt acquired the Bentworth Hall from Henry Lord Windsor, and this included the Burkham area.

In 1748 James Magewick Battin, presumably a descendant, held the manor, and he is given as the owner in a 1778 Survey of Hampshire.
