[1] Built in 1906, it initially served as novitiate for the Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross and was known as "Dujarie Institute", before being sold to the University of Notre Dame and converted into a residence hall in 1966.

[10] Carroll Hall was constructed in 1906 by Brother Charles Borromeo Harding and christened "Dujarie Institute" after Jacques-François Dujarié.

[2][14] The foundations were laid December 8, 1906 by the Congregation of Holy Cross Superior Giblert Francois and it was dedicated in an elaborate ceremony in August 1907 by Herman Joseph Alerding, bishop of Fort Wayne.

[19][16] From then, it was used as a seminary for the Brothers of Holy Cross, the Dujare institute or scholasticate, where the novitiates studies and lived before professing their final vows.

[2][14] In 1920, Blessed Brother André Bessette lodged in the building, in room 306, a small plain chamber with white walls and a single window, which today has been incorporated in the suite occupied by the assistant rector.

[20][5] In 1966, the Brothers sold the property to the University of Notre Dame, and in the fall of 1966 around a 100 students moved in, all juniors and seniors.

In 1979, Carroll Hall students voted to abolish parietals, but were met by opposition from the university administration and Rev.

Carroll Hall lies on the southwest shores of St. Mary's Lake, from which it enjoys views of the Main Administration Building and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart,[16][6][2][18] in what has been described as one of the prettiest spots on campus.

[42] The hall is a five-story building in yellow Notre Dame brick, with classical decorations and a simple unadorned facade.

[47][48] The distant location from the rest of the campus and the small size of the dorm, makes the community especially tight knit and has given rise to many traditions and unique features.

[49] The Vermin nickname originated from the rodent population that infested the building between the departure of the Brothers in 1966 and the arrival of undergrads the following year.

[59] Other events include Third Floor Abs, a fitness program that has spread throughout campus, and Friday cookouts, which take place on the FarQuad in front of the lake.
