[5] On April 10, 2023, an explosion and subsequent fire at South Fork Dairy, about 10 miles south of Dimmitt, resulted in the deaths of an estimated 18,000 dairy cattle.

[7] As of the census[13] of 2000, 8,285 people, 2,761 households, and 2,159 families were residing in the county.

About 20.50% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.20% had someone living alone who was 65 or older.

The median income for a household in the county was $30,619, and for a family was $35,422.
