Keter began his political career in 2002 when he contested for a parliamentary seat and won to represent the people of Belgut Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya.

In 2013 he ran for the senatorial seat for Kericho County on a URP ticket under the Jubilee Coalition led by Uhuru Kenyatta.

Keter won to become the second senator for Kericho County in 2013 since the independence of Kenya, a position that he held till he was named the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum under Kenyatta.

He resigned in February 2022 to venture into elective politics in his Rift Valley's backyard.

Their younger daughter Daisy graduated with a master's degree in Commercial and Corporate Law LL.M from the Queen Mary University.
