Chester is situated in the Adirondack Park, and the northern town line is the border of Essex County, New York.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 3,614 people, 1,280 households, and 889 families residing in the town.

Peckham Materials Corporation, a manufacturer of asphalt and crushed stone, operates a large quarry at the southern end of the town.
